1 hospitalized after apartment fire in Walhalla

WALHALLA, SC (WSPA) - A fire destroyed two units and damaged several others and one person was taken to the hospital after a fire at an apartment complex in Walhalla, Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Walhalla Gardens Apartments shortly before 5:00pm and found heavy smoke and fire coming from both floors of the building, according to Chief Brandon Burton of the Walhalla Fire Department.

One person was taken to the hospital along with their service dog, according to Chief Burton.

Nobody else was hurt in the fire.

Around 35 firefighters responded to the fire scene including crews from Walhalla Fire Department, West Union Fire Department, Westminster Fire Department, Westminster Rescue, and Oconee County Emergency Services.

Ten families are being assisted by the American Red Cross after the fire. According to a news release, the Red Cross was helping around 16 people.

American Red Cross volunteers provided food, clothing, other essentials, as well as comfort kits with personal hygiene items for the families.
