NC teen accused of stealing and cashing checks from mailboxes
HENDERSONVILLE, NC (WSPA) A 19-year-old Fletcher woman has been arrested after deputies say she stole checks from business and residential mailboxes and cashed them at banks.
Kaitlyn Schay Styles faces 12 felony counts of larceny of chose in action from the Henderson County Sheriff's Office. Deputies say Styles took checks in northern Henderson and Buncombe counties.
Styles stole checks people were sending in to pay bills by targeting mailboxes that had their flags raised, according to Sheriff Frank Stout.
Investigators say she would forge signatures on the stolen checks and deposit them into her account or her friend's account via ATM's, and then withdraw cash.
Major Stout says that about $1,500 was stolen in Henderson County.
More charges are pending for taking money from those banks, aside from the charges for stealing from residents, the sheriff said.
Styles is due in court on Tuesday. She's being held at the Henderson County jail under an $89,000.00 secured bond.
The Henderson County Sheriff's Office advises residents to never leave checks in mailboxes, but to drop them off at the post office instead.
