PICKENS Co., S.C. (WSPA) -- Deputies are investigating after a woman told them she was abducted by a masked man who forced her to drive him to various locations before pushing her into Lake Keowee.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release the department is investigating the alleged kidnapping along with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.
Pickens County deputies say the 66-year-old woman was getting into her vehicle at her home on Holly Springs School Road around 9:30 a.m. Sunday when she was abducted by an unknown man in an orange mask.
Oconee County deputies found the victim's vehicle around 12:30 p.m. Sunday near the Oconee Nuclear Station. Authorities there also found the victim who told them she was forced out of her SUV and thrown into Lake Keowee.
Investigators say the suspect forced the victim to drive him to various locations near the lake before making the victim stop the SUV near the bridge on Highway 183 around 11 a.m. Sunday. The suspect forced the victim to walk through a wooded area before she was pushed into the lake.
Deputies say a security officer from the Oconee Nuclear Station helped the victim after seeing her in the water near the facility’s property.
The victim wasn't seriously injured.
In a news release Monday afternoon, sheriff's office officials said the suspect has not been identified or located, and his motive is also unknown.
The assailant is described as 6 feet tall with a medium build. He was wearing a blue sweat shirt and black pants. His race is unknown.
