Rifle found, but no suspects after shots fired at Spartanburg Co. deputies

SPARTANBURG (WSPA) - Spartanburg County investigators say they found the rifle used to shoot at deputies during a chase overnight, but no signs of the two suspects.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff says no deputies were hurt in the incident that started with an attempted traffic stop late Sunday near midnight at Highway 9 and Giles Drive in Boiling Springs. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.

Deputies believe two people were in the car. According to deputies, someone in the vehicle opened fire out of the back windshield of the vehicle with a rifle, hitting a deputy's vehicle several times.

The suspects also fired at other officers who joined in the chase. Deputies did not fire back at fleeing suspects.

The chase ended when the suspects crashed on Successful Way off Bryant Road. Deputies say the suspects bailed out of the car and ran from the scene.

Deputies blocked off Bryant Road at Business Interstate 85 as part of the search for several hours early Monday morning. K-9 officers and SWAT also tracked leads near IAC corporation off Herald Journal Boulevard.

As of 9:00 am Monday, the sheriff's office said it had exhausted all it's present leads to find the two men. They had a very limited description of the two men they were trying to find.

The sheriff's office says it did find the rifle they believe was used to shoot at the officers from the car. All businesses in the area were searched and cleared.

Anyone with information about what happened or the suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) CRIME-SC.
