Scrap metal, rubber catch fire at Spartanburg Co. business

WSPA Staff - SPARTANBURG Co., S.C. (WSPA) -- Crews spent hours on Friday battling a fire at Commercial Metals Company.

Smoke from the fire blanketed the surrounding area in a haze, while a black plume could be seen miles away on Friday morning.

The metals recycling plant, formerly known as OmniSource, is located on Nazareth Church Road.

Poplar Springs Fire Chief Tommy Norris said the fire was almost under control around 8:35 a.m.

Chief Norris said a pile of scrap metal – about 200 feet wide by 50 feet high – caught fire.

Crews used heavy machinery to turn the scrap in order to extinguish the fire.

He said there are no public health concerns.

"You've got a lot of metal. You've got a lot of rubber products, and just any kind of friction or heat could set it off. Could have been a spark from one of the machines that starts it," Chief Norris said.
