Trendy "Dragon Breath" Dessert Comes to Upstate Malls

A new trend is coming to Upstate malls: a dessert supposed to make you breathe like a dragon when you eat it. The food stand “Dragon Breath” is now serving the treat at the Haywood Mall in Greenville and the Westgate Mall in Spartanburg.

“I have been by this several times and wanting to try it,” one customer says. “When I tried it, it was so different, so unique.”

With roots in California, “Dragon Breath” is serving fruity cereal soaked in liquid nitrogen. After it has evaporated, customers are left with a very cold treat. “I was trying to blow it out of my ears and I couldn't do it,” another customer laughed.

The cereal bites come in different flavors, and there are optional flavored syrups for dipping. Dr. Justin Moll at Parkside Pediatrics says Dragon Breath is safe to eat.

“You have this sort of gentle layer, a protective layer of gas. When the liquid nitrogen comes into contact with your warm skin, that contrast of temperature actually protects the skin,” he explained.

The only possible danger, he says, is touching the liquid nitrogen before it evaporates. “It sounds fun and safe. I think I would have my kids try it just for the ‘wow’ factor. The most important thing I think is, you are not trying to do this at home...If I was the one creating the liquid nitrogen snack, I would be more worried than the professionals.”

Dragon Breath is available for purchase for $6.50 for a small container of cereal bites, or $8 for a large.
