Upstate schools encourage alternatives to walkouts

WSPA - Events are planned this week at schools here and across the country in response to the tragic school shooting in Florida.

Walkouts are expected nationwide on Wednesday morning

Greenville County School officials are urging students to hold events inside for safety reasons rather than walk out.

At Riverside High School, students plan to attach balloons to 17 desks in remembrance of the lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February.

Other planned events include writing thank you notes to emergency responders.

In Spartanburg County, several district officials said they could not officially support a walk out but they did support students’ right to express themselves. Students are asked to do this at an appropriate time and place and said they will make efforts to find alternatives to walk outs.
