Whether you are pounding the pavement or hitting the gym, a lot of us want to lose weight in 2009 and according to one local doctor many people will go about it all wrong.
Dr. Doug Whitehead with Greer Family Medicine “They definitely want a quick fix. They want the latest pill. They ask me frequently oh what do you think about this pill over the counter that i heard about in the magazine and many times I will say well those quick fixes are not what they are touted to be.“
He says you may lose weight on them but there’s a big chance you will gain it all back when you go off the diet because no one can live off shakes or pills.
According to Dr. Whitehead, “Really the only thing that works seems to be the oldest ancient thing and that is calories in calories out. You take in calories and you burn calories but the excess is put on our body as fat. “
He says you burn about one thousand calories just from your every day functions like sleeping and your heart beating, but the average person takes in about three thousand calories a day. That means there are two thousand extra calories and it only takes three thousand five hundred extra calories to add on a pound of weight.
Dr. Whitehead says, “When you are looking at weight loss it really is calorie based and if you can lower the amount of food that you are taking in the amount of calories you take in then you can lose weight.“
However, if you want to lose it faster, the experts agree you are going to have to get moving.
Life Center Trainer Dane Smith says that’s how the fat leaves your body.
Smith says, “Oxygen has to be present to mobilize a fat molecule.“
He adds it is important to get your heart rate up and keep it up.
According to Smith, “The threshold where you start burning the majority of fat is around 15 minutes into your workout. So if you are going to optimize fat burning you are going to need to go longer than 15 minutes.“
The longer you go after that, the more calories you’ll burn.
It is a daily formula to live by. Burn more calories than you take in and you will watch the pounds melt away.

WSPA may not agree because they may lose viewers this way but the best way to lose weight is cut the TV off! With no TV you get off the couch. Do stuff you need to do around the house that never seems to get done watching TV. Also the computer. I am on it because I am disabled but boredom will cause you to get outside and at least walk. I know many that eat and snack in front of the TV and computer. Without it no snacking. Eat healthy and no junk food or unnatural additives like throwing in a TV dinner or eating a bag of chips and drinking a soda. Motivate yourself. Take a picture of yourself. Put it on the refrigerator. Put on music when doing housework to fight the boredom of housework. Find what works for you and stick to it. Using a push mower works wonders but in this drought we had very little to cut for a long time. Bet we will this year!
