Train Derails in Laurens County

A CSX train derailed in the Kinards Community of Laurens County this afternoon. The derailment occured when the train attempted to avoid a brush fire in the area, according to the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office. The engine was knocked off the tracks as well as three cars. The train had 95 cars total, and was carrying coal. Some of that coal was spilled. The other portion of the train extended into Newberry County. US 76 was closed for several hours due to the fact the train tracks where the accident occured runs parallel to the highway. There are no reports of injuries.
