A slow moving front will bring more moderate rain across the Upstate and mountains this afternoon. Amounts will vary with heavier rain to the north in the mountains through Wednesday.
A tornado watch in effect for most of the Upstate and southern sections of Western NC has been cancelled. A flash flood watch remains in effect through Wednesday evening for Greenville, Pickens, and Oconee Counties in the Upstate, northeastern Georgia bordering Oconee County, and the mountains of western North Carolina.
Storm Team 7 Meteorologist Richard McCollough says these heavy January showers are just what we need to put a dent in the drought situation.
According to Storm Team 7 Chief Meteorologist Christy Henderson, rain amounts could top 5 inches in a few locations across Western North Carolina that have already received 2-3 inches ahead of the main system. Upstate totals could be 2-3 inches, bringing much needed rain to area lakes and dry ground. Saturated soil combined with strong winds into Wednesday could topple a few trees and powerlines, especially across Western NC, but lighter winds will return by Thursday.
High pressure takes control for the end of the week; look for sunshine and slightly above-average temperatures. Our next front pushes through on Saturday with a chance for a few showers, followed by some cooler temperatures for Sunday.
