Girls Running Program Announces Fall Line Up

Girls on the Run of Western North Carolina will provide their elementary and middle school life-skills and exercise programs at forty-seven Western North Carolina locations this fall.

Last spring the local non-profit served 478 girls in 21 locations, due to the program’s increased popularity, this fall it estimates it will serve over 1000 girls in seven counties.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization offering programs at the elementary and middle school levels dedicated to preparing girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. 

The 14-week curriculum addresses issues important to pre-adolescent girls such as self-esteem, healthy lifestyle habits, setting goals, teamwork, keeping promises and good communication skills, as well as, preparing the girls to participate in a 5k community run at the end of the fourteen weeks. 

The “Girls on Track” program for 6th - 8th grade girls will be held at AC Reynolds, Asheville, Cane Creek, Erwin, Evergreen Community Charter School, Francine Delany New School for Children, Hanger Hall School for Girls, North Windy Ridge, Owen, and Valley Springs middle schools in Buncombe County; Brevard Middle School in Transylvania County; Cherokee Middle School in Swain County and Canton Middle School in Haywood County.

The “Girls on the Run” program for 3rd – 5th grade girls will be offered at Asheville Catholic School, Avery’s Creek, Black Mountain, Candler, Carolina Day, Claxton, Estes, Fairview, Francine Delany New School for Children, Glen Arden, Haw Creek, Hominy Valley, Isaac Dickson, Johnston, Oakley, Pisgah, Sand Hill-Venable, Weaverville and West Buncombe elementary schools in Buncombe County; Meadowbrook and North Canton elementary schools in Haywood County; Bruce Drysdale, Etowah, Hendersonville, Immaculata Catholic, and Mountain Community elementary schools in Henderson County; Jackson County Recreation & Parks Department in Jackson County; Eastfield and Old Fort elementary schools in McDowell County; Cherokee, Swain East, and Swain West elementary schools in Swain County and Brevard Elementary in Transylvania County.

The sessions will be one day a week after school and begin the week of September 1st running through the week of December 8th. Registration will run from August 18th through the first week of September. Complete listings of locations, meeting dates and times can be found here.
