The new law applies to motorcycles, mopeds, and bicycles. They are often too light for traffic signal triggers to recognize them.
Senator Jake Knotts is the bill sponsor and said motorcyclists should use safety common sense as well.
“Whenever you go out into the traffic…look both ways and understand that cars don’t always see motorcycles.“
Cliff Dalton is the legislative coordinator for the Abate of South Carolina Motorcycle Group. He helped get the law passed but said that he’s still somewhat afraid of getting pulled over.
“I feel apprehensive about the law enforcement stopping me now if I go through a red light,“ said Dalton, “but I keep a copy of the bill with me so that I can show them.“
The law took three years to get passed.
Governor Mark Sanford said he wants to see more common sense laws that have big impacts on South Carolina.
