House Budget Writers To Hear School Cuts Plans

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - House budget writers will learn how the
Education Department will deal with budget cuts.
The department briefs a Ways and Means subcommittee Tuesday
about how it has handled this budget year’s reductions of $363
million in a budget that remains the state’s largest now at $2.2
billion.
Education Superintendent Jim Rex is expected to renew calls to
grant school districts more flexibility to handle spending
decisions. In October, Rex asked legislators to relieve school
districts of a 180-day school year requirement and to free schools
to set schedules that could include four-day weeks or year-round
classes.
