Each month 7 On Your Side honors a person doing grewat things in our community with the Caring for the carolinas Award.

This month three Landston Charter Middle School students won the June award for helping thousands of victims devasted by the recent tsunami in Japan get back on their feet.

The three students are Mary Coker, Erin McCown and Kayla Hayes.

The girls wanted to hrlp but didn't know what to do until they heard about Souls 4 Shoes, and Alabama based nonprofit organization that collects new shoes to give to those in need.

To solicite help, the girls partnered with other schools like Standing Springs Baptist Church and Ralph Chandler Middle School and they did everything they could think of to bring others on board.

The trio also went door to door collecting from friends and family, in total the girls collected nearly 2300 pairs of shoes.

The then boxed up the shoes and sent them to Alabama to be shipped to Japan.

The students say one of the things that their school teaches is helping others and the community.
