Greenville County Deputies charged James Byron Rushton, of 2054 Edwards Lake Road, with killing a woman early Sunday morning.

Deputies say they responded to a 911 call at Rushton’s house. When they arrived, a release states they found Rushton, who originally called 911, attempting CPR on a woman. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced the woman dead.

Deputies say Rushton told them the woman suffered from a drug overdose.

Rushton told deputies, they say, that he picked up the woman at her boyfriend’s house after an argument. They say Rushton brought the woman back to his house just after 7 p.m. on Saturday.

An autopsy was conducted and the cause of death was determined to be the result of violent sexual assault.

Deputies arrested Rushton Monday afternoon. He is currently being held in the Greenville County Detention Center without bond.

Greenville County Deputy Coroner Kent Dill identified the victim as 33-year old April Dawn Smith, of Lot 126 Barrington Wood Circle, Greer. The cause of death is being classified as a violent sexual assault.
