Report: Upstate Senator Owes $67,000 In Taxes

By Graeme Moore

According to a report published in the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, a business belonging to State Sen. Lee Bright (R-Spartanburg) owes the state more than $67,000 in taxes.

According to the newspaper's article, Bright's company, On Time Trucking Inc., failed to pay employer withholding taxes for a period between 2008 and 2009.

Thus, the S.C. Department of Revenue has filed a lien against On Time Trrucking in the amount of $67,261.02 -- which includes the late taxes, penalties and interest.

Bright told the newspaper the tax issue was a misunderstanding that occurred when he shuttered one company and moved some of its employees to the current company, On Time Trucking.

Bright told this reporter his trucking business is run out of one building, but there are technically two corporations for business purposes. Over the years, some employees were being paid out of one corporation, while the others were being paid out of the second corporation.

At some point in 2008, Bright says he changed payroll companies and removed employees from the On Time Trucking LLC. They were moved, he says, to On Time Transportation LLC, from which they were being paid.

The payroll company, Bright says, told Bright to tell the SC Department of Revenue to suspend the Trucking LLC's account since no one was being paid out of it.

Bright says someone at DOR told him it would be fine to suspend it, and he thought the issue was resolved. Turns out, Bright says, they should have canceled out the account because DOR thought employees were still being paid.

Bright says he spoke with DOR late Thursday afternoon and that they told him the lien would be taken care of in the next few days -- meaning it will be expunged.

Stay tuned.
