June Caring for the Carolinas Award Winner: Sharon Totherow

Sharon Totherow was awarded the June Caring for the Carolinas Award. She was nominated by her 11 year old son Matthew. Matthew wrote the Caring the Carolinas team about his mother who started the non-profit organization/website Domestic Violence Assistance. Sharon says for years she was in an abusive relationship with Matthew's father, and in 2003 at midnight she escaped,not knowing where she was running to. Matthew was 5 years old at this time. Now , through her non-profit, Sharon helps abused families start over when they flee an abusive home. She refers women to shelters and others that can help. She also collects donations of toys,furniture, linens,and anything that would help families start over. Matthew says he is very proud of his mother for supporting families that are being abused. He says he is inspired by his mother because she is always helping people. We were happy to honor Sharon Totherow with our Caring for the Carolinas award, as she continues working to end domestic violence.
