SCHP: Traffic Deaths Up Dramatically in 2012

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says deadly crashes are way up in the palmetto state.

So far this year, 47 people have been killed. That’s compared to 30 in 2011.

Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne tells 7 On Your Side, the concern is that the numbers are up, and we still haven’t hit the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer.

"It would really be taking a shot in the dark to say why there are so many people being involved in these collisions at this point in time,” explained Rhyne.

"Driving is made up of many, many mistakes that we never know that we make because we get by with them. It's when we're involved in an accident that you realize you made a mistake, and sometimes that mistake ends up with tragic consequences and we certainly want to stop that."

Lance Cpl. Rhyne says they’re hoping these numbers will serve as a reminder for drivers to be careful.

In Spartanburg County, there have been 2 people killed this year, compared to 2011. In Greenville County, 3 deaths compared to 2 in 2011.

In Anderson County, there was a dramatic increase. 6 people have been killed so far this year, compared to 0 last year.

Some counties, though, buck the trend.

In Cherokee County, no one has died on roads so far this year. Last year, there were two killed during this same time.

In Union and Pickens County, the numbers stayed the same at zero fatalities so far.
