At an announcement Wednesday, Greenville Zoo officials revealed details about its newborn giraffe.  Click here to watch the announcement.

They say the calf is a boy, whom they've named Kiko.  The name is translated to "Autumn's Child" in Swahili.

Kiko was born late Monday night to mother Autumn, 6 and father Walter, 7.

Kiko had his first neonatal exam and zookeepers say both he and Autumn are doing well.

They say Kiko is happy and healthy and stands around 5'8" and weighs 120 pounds.  He could eventually grow to 16 feet tall and 2,600 pounds.

They also say Autumn was a little shocked when Kiko was born in the Masai giraffe barn at the zoo earlier this week, but her instincts kicked in and she will be a great mother.

Around 1 million web viewers have tuned in to the webcam that gained world-wide attention.  Hundreds of thousands witnessed the birth live.

The birth happened around midnight.  Kiko was seen moving his head while Autumn cleaned and watched him.  It wasn’t until about an hour later that he stood up for the first time.

Kiko and Autumn were given time to bond before they were put on display for the public.

Crystal Rose, Public Services Manager of the Greenville Zoo, says this is the first giraffe birth here.

"To be able to have a giraffe birth here at the Greenville Zoo, kind of puts us on the map," Rose said.

Rose says Kiko will stay at the zoo for about a year, before it's moved to another zoo.

She says, hopefully there will be more big announcements to come. In the next couple of years, they say to expect 2 more giraffe births.

"The third baby, hopefully there will be a third baby, will stay here at the Greenville Zoo," Rose explained.
