The Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board is under fire after recent resignations of board members and a scathing letter from the head of the state agency that oversees them. Greenville County council members have also summoned the agency's board to a meeting Tuesday, after issues have been brewing for months. "I'm very concerned," says council member Joe Dill. "They're serving people who don't have the ability to fight back."
The concern comes after a recent audit showed the local agency was more than $1 million dollars in the red. Soon after, the board fired its executive director, Brent Parker, without notifying the department at the state level, according to a letter written by the agency's director Beverly Buscemi. The letter says, "DDSN has received numerous phone calls and complaints from families served by the Greenville DSN board."
Dill says county council has asked members of the board, along with the board's chairwoman Roxie Kincannon to be present at Tuesday's meeting. Family members and parents of clients also plan on attending.
