The Wells family will tell you, living with their adult son, Tim, has been tough for all of them. Beverly Wells says her son’s battle with mental illness has him relying on social security benefits. Beverly is also his designated payee, so she receives his $444 monthly payment on his behalf.

Beverly took over as Tim's payee from his estranged wife last May.

“There was a check that was wrote to her so I couldn't get her to cash it,” said Beverly. “So I had to take it and turn it back in. So they was supposed to re-issue it.”

Beverly says that check never came.

“We're on disability too and it takes what we're trying to survive on to try to help him survive too,” said Beverly.

"That's kind of what got all this started,” said Tim Wells. “I wasn't able to pay the bills.”

Beverly says they went to their local Social Security office several times with her bank statements to show she's received every monthly payment for Tim, except for last May.

“Every time we'd go up there, they'd say, well we're going to go ahead and reissue it. And it never showed up in the bank, over and over and over again,” said Beverly.

We contacted the SSA regional office in Atlanta. Because of privacy reasons, they couldn’t discuss details of Tim’s case, but said they would contact him to address the issue.

Within a few hours, the Wells say they got a call. Beverly now says it's now solved and they're expecting the $444 in the mail via a Direct Express debit card by Wednesday.

And an added bonus, Beverly says the SSA also discovered that Tim was due another $276 disability payment from last year.

“I really appreciate it. You don't know how much we appreciate it,” said Beverly.

If you receive federal benefits, make sure to keep all documentation of how much you're supposed to get and when.

Keep a record of each direct deposit made to your bank.

If you have a question, bring those documents to your local Social Security office. You can also call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
