Labor Day traditionally signals the end of summer vacation season, but the warm weather will keep people out on the water for weeks.
One organization is working to keep children safe.
Boaters on Lake Bowen in Spartanburg County now have access to free life jackets for children.
Safe Kids put together a kiosk to loan people the flotation devices.
“The life jacket loaner boards are going up across the country, by lake wardens all across the country and they want to save lives,” explains Penny Shaw of Safe Kids. “They notice that people are not getting on their boats with enough life jackets for every member that’s boating. So they want to make sure that there are enough life jackets for children and their families.”
There are similar programs on Lakes Hartwell and Keowee.
