Greenville Man Sentenced For Stealing Mail

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, S.C. -

A Greenville man will spend a year in prison after being sentenced for stealing mail.

Harlan Benji Lanning, 33, was sentenced in federal court in Anderson for possession of stolen mail according to the United States Attorney.

Investigators say Lanning was parked in a car at the gas pumps at a Lil Cricket on White Horse Road in July, 2011 when sheriff's deputies were called by store employees.

A Greenville County Sheriff's Office deputy asked Lanning to step out of his car. He'd been there for 45 minutes when law officers were called and Lanning appeared to be disoriented.

When he got out of the car, the deputy noticed mail strewn about the vehicle.

GCSO investigators say Lanning was stealing mail to create counterfeit checks.

He was sentenced to 12 months behind bars.
