COLUMBIA, S.C. -

South Carolina tree farmers are celebrating the forestry industry's economic impact at the Statehouse.

Members of the South Carolina Tree Farm Program made their annual visit to lawmakers in Columbia Wednesday. They were recognized by both the House and Senate, before holding a news conference.

During that event, the group discussed the following critical issues impacting forest landowners:

  • Support for the South Carolina Forestry Commission budget, the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service budget and the Department of Natural Resources budget
  • Increasing infrastructure funding to improve bridges which hinder efficient transportation of SC-grown forest products
  • Increasing weight limits on trucks hauling wood to improve trucking efficiency to make South Carolina more competitive and on par with neighboring states

They say addressing these issues will strengthen South Carolina's role in meeting global wood demand in the future.

The forestry industry has a $17 billion impact on South Carolina's economy each year. It also creates about 90,000 jobs that account for more than $4 billion in payroll annually.
