Elaborate Check Cashing Scheme Sweeps Western North Carolina

Posted: Updated:

Cops are trying to crack a check cashing scheme. It not only spans several counties but it's very complex. Deputies say this crime spree involves theft, forged signatures, and fake identification.

They tell us, so far, three men have been able to walk off with thousands of dollars.

George Geisler had no idea his business All Bright Sanitation was targeted by some crafty crooks.

"We didn't notice that someone broke into the building," Geisler said.

That is until Geisler got a phone call from a local bank, about some questionable checks being cashed.

Geisler tells us the burglars climbed through this window and walked away with 50 blank checks.

Deputies say this is an elaborate scheme.

The thieves were able to expertly forge Geisler's signature and then pass the checks off as payroll checks.

The crooks made fake drivers licenses, and used them to trick the tellers into cashing the checks.

In all they scored more than $60,000 dollars.

They did this for weeks without raising a single red flag, until now.

"It's not easy you have to pick up a lot of garbage to make $20,000, and we are a small business so its not easy," Geisler said.

Deputies believe three men are responsible for breaking into a total of 3 businesses, and stole checks.

"It's disturbing being a victim of a crime like this" Geisler said.

Deputies tell us the men cashed the checks everywhere from Spartanburg county, to McDowell County North Carolina.

"You would think if someone is smart enough to do that they could make an honest living," Geisler said.

Geisler says he isn't taking any chances, and from now on he'll safeguard his checks.

"We upgraded our security system and put everything in a safe now," Geisler said.

Geisler is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the check cashing scheme.

Anyone with information should call their local sheriff's office.
