The South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a Red Flag Alert for this weekend.
The Red Fag alert in effect until Sunday at midnight.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission issued the Red Flag Alert around midnight on Friday.
Citing a forecast that includes high winds, low humidity and warm temperatures, a Forestry Commission spokesman stated that the conditions, especially winds exceeding 30 miles per hour, will contribute to an already elevated fire danger level. Those factors increase the risk of possible wildfires throughout the state.
A Red Flag Alert does not outlaw the burning of debris, although some local ordinances do when a Red Flag Alert is issued. However, the Forestry Commission urges residents to postpone burning since debris fires that get out of control contribute to nearly half of all wildfires in the state.
