A Landrum woman is charged with homicide by child neglect after her two-year old son died when a chest of drawers fell on top of him in their home.
Margie Elizabeth Shaver, 27, turned herself in at the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center Thursday morning after the death of her son and injuries to his four-year old sister on March 12.
Deputies were called to her home on Laurinda Lane late that night and found the young boy underneath a chest of drawers along with his injured sister. He was pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
The Greenville County Sheriff's Office investigation claims Shaver locked the children in a bedroom and didn't supervise them.
Deputies say the chest of drawers fell on the children, but Shaver ignored the loud noise in the bedroom. Her son died from what deputies say was preventable asphyxia. Her daughter was treated for her injuries and removed from the home and placed in the care of the Department of Social Services.
Shaver and her husband Christopher Jerome Shaver, 30 were also charged with one count each of unlawful neglect of a child due to the condition of the home.
GCSO investigators found the filth and infestation of the home placed the children at unreasonable risk of harm according to arrest warrants.
Mr. Shaver was not home at the time of the incident which resulted in the death of his son.
Margie and Christopher Shaver are being held at the Greenville County Detention Center.
