SENECA, S.C. -
A truck crashed into Lake Hartwell late Thursday afternoon in Oconee County.
Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King said that 911 dispatchers received several calls at 4:51 p.m. about a truck that had crashed into Lake Hartwell from Martin Creek Road. According to King, the driver of the truck was the only person in the truck at the time of the wreck and managed to escape and make it to the shore. Emergency rescue responders arrived on scene and checked out the driver, who did not sustain any major injuries and did not have to be transported to the hospital.
The Oconee County Dive Team was called in to check and make sure that there were no other passengers in the truck and to assist with the removal of the truck. Meanwhile, the county's HazMat unit was called to the scene to ensure that no fuel or fluids leaked into the water.
The truck was removed shortly before 8 p.m., King said. The Highway Patrol is investigating.
