The Carolina Panthers have re-signed unrestricted free agent cornerback Captain Munnerlyn and signed unrestricted free agent safety Mike Mitchell, the team announced Thursday.
"We are pleased with the addition of Mike Mitchell and the return of Captain Munnerlyn," says head coach Ron Rivera. "Mitchell should provide competition in the secondary and we know Captain is a tough, hard-nosed competitor capable of making big plays."
Munnerlyn, 5-8 and 190 pounds, played in all 16 games with 11 starts for the Panthers in 2012. He produced a career-high 66 tackles and tied a single-season team record with two interception returns for touchdowns.
A veteran of four NFL seasons, Munnerlyn has played his entire career with the Panthers after being selected in the seventh round (216th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of the University of South Carolina. He has played in 61 career games with 34 starts and has tallied 211 tackles, two sacks, five interceptions, including three returned for touchdowns, and 25 passes defensed.
Mitchell, 6-0 and 215 pounds, joins the Panthers after playing the first four seasons of his career with the Oakland Raiders. In 2012, Mitchell played in all 16 games with two starts, producing 47 tackles, one sack and one pass defensed.
Selected by Oakland in the second round (47th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Ohio University, Mitchell has played in 61 career games with nine starts. He has career totals of 145 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions and 11 passes defensed.
