CHARLESTON, S.C. -

A 28-year-old woman who authorities say unsuccessfully tried to fire a gun at officials at a private Charleston girls' school has been ordered to get a mental evaluation.

A judge says court officials need to know if Alice Boland is competent for trial and also if she was insane at the time of her alleged offenses.

Boland faces federal charges including lying to buy a gun, illegal possession of a gun by someone determined to be mentally incompetent and attempted firing of a gun in a school zone.

Authorities say Boland brought the gun to Ashley Hall last month, pulling the trigger as school employees approached her. Investigators say the gun didn't fire because there weren't any bullets in the chamber.
