SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

There's a new K-9 deputy on patrol in the Upstate.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office introduced the trained Belgian Malinois during a special ceremony Monday morning.

The sheriff's office says the David Bailey Memorial K-9 Fund provided the dog.

Trooper Bailey was killed on duty in Greenville County back in 2000.

Bailey's family was at the presentation.

"He loved animals," said mother Fran Odell.  "It would be so fitting, so fitting for him to have one, especially one in his honor."

It costs about $12,000 to purchase and train a K-9.  The fund covers all of the expense.
