High Speed Chase Ends In Wreck On I-85 In Oconee County

OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. -

A high speed chase ended in a crash on Interstate 85 in Oconee County.

According to our news coverage partners at the Anderson Independent-Mail, Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said that deputies pursued a 2006 Buick sedan in the Hartwell area late Tuesday afternoon. The chase continued onto I-85 and then into South Carolina with speeds reaching up to 100 miles per hour.

According to Lance Cpl. Tony Keller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver of the car, 43-year-old Tommy Crocker, of Hartwell, Georgia, turned around and went south on I-85. Keller said that the Crocker was traveling south when he attempted to turn around at the state line and lost control of the vehicle. Crocker's vehicle struck the left side of the bridge over Lake Hartwell and then struck the right side of ther bridge before skidding to a stop in a grassy area.

The Independent-Mail reports that Cleveland stated that Crocker was reckless and will be charged by the sheriff's office. Keller said that the accident remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and no charges have been filed as of yet.

Crocker was wearing a seatbelt and transported to Oconee Medical Center for minor injuries.
