SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

Mike Hall is stepping down as Director of Athletics at USC Upstate after nearly two decades at the school.

Hall resigned his position to become the Commissioner of the Southern States Athletic Conference. Hall's last day at Upstate will be April 12.

"At this time in my life, I felt it was time to move in a new direction and am excited for this opportunity at the Southern States Athletic Conference," said Hall in a statement released by the school.

"It is a bittersweet feeling to leave USC Upstate. There are many great people here. I am very proud of our student-athletes and coaches and the accomplishments they have achieved both athletically and academically during my time here."

Hall spent 19 years as the USC Upstate Director of Athletics that saw the university move from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I membership in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007.

Upstate Athletics saw more than $10 million in facility and infrastructure improvements during his tenure.

The South States Athletic Conference competes on the NAIA Division I level and has 15 member institutions in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Plans for the athletic director's position at USC Upstate will be announced soon according to a university news release.
