Asheville Woman's Group Upset Over "Viper" Tweet

Posted: Updated:

The head of the League of Women Voters in Asheville is upset with a tweet by the Buncombe County Republican Party referring to the voters' group as "vipers."

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that GOP leaders dismissed the tweet at a joke.

GOP spokesman Nathan West says the tweet sent to the party's nearly 800 Twitter followers was just a "silly comment." But West also pointed out the League of Women Voters has never been friendly with Republicans.

The tweet referred to a Wednesday meeting as "The League of Women Vipers."

Karen Oeschlaeger is president of the Asheville-Buncombe League chapter. She says it's unfortunate one of the two major political parties would antagonize the group.

The league organizes forums on public policy issues and encourages participation in voting and government.
