Anderson City K9 Unit To Receive Vests

Posted: Updated:

An Upstate police department is thinking outside the box to raise money for its four-legged crime fighters.

Their K9 Unit will soon have new ballistic vests, thanks to a Groupon Grassroots campaign, to protect canines across the country, says Lt. Tony Tilley with the Anderson Police Department.

"These K9s sometimes are in more imminent danger than even our officers are, they will go into situations where our regular officers will not go, or cannot go," Tilley explained.

The funding comes from a national campaign, by an organization called Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

They partnered with Groupon Grassroots, allowing people from all over to give $10 dollars and work together to help K9 units across the country.

7 On Your Side spoke with Kyle Klatt, Supervisor of Groupon Grassroots via Skype.

"A hundred percent of those funds go to the organization, so Groupon absorbs the credit card handling fees," Klatt explained. "Every donation you see on the site is used for the product that's outlined on the campaign page."

Vested Interest In K9s says the campaign is working, providing funding to police departments in 30 states. Each vest costs about $950 dollars.

The $155,000 dollars raised over eight days will buy about 164 vests.

The organization says even after the event ended, people just kept giving. They say the department will have the vests in about four months.

Groupon Grassroots works with organizations across the country to fund many different kinds of projects.
