SC Sweepstakes Owner Arrested On Gambling Charge

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

A former law enforcement investigator who created a sweepstakes company has been arrested for illegal gambling.

Spartanburg County deputies say L.W. Flynn was arrested Wednesday and charged with having illegal gambling machines.

Flynn created Magic Minutes, a company that sells long-distance calling cards and offers buyers the chance to win cash prizes after playing casino games.

Spartanburg County ruled the machines illegal last year. Several machines were seized during a raid, and Flynn testified he had created and owned them.

Flynn was a longtime investigator for Kershaw County prosecutors and once ran for sheriff there. He was released on bond Thursday, and it wasn't known if he had an attorney.

Gov. Nikki Haley recently signed a bill that strengthens the state's 2000 ban on video poker to include sweepstakes machines.
