Posted: Updated:

An 83-year-old man is dead after attempting to fight a fire.

On Saturday morning just after 5 a.m. Anderson Firefighters responded to Cartee Road for a structure fire.

Billy Cheek and his wife were inside their home when the fire alarm went off. Mr. Cheek had walked outside and Mrs. Cheek flagged down a car that was passing by.

Chief Billy Gibson with The Anderson County Fire Department says Mr. Cheek exited his home  and attempted to fight the fire using a water hose.

He was taken to AnMed where he died. The Anderson County Coroner's Office says it appears Cheek died of a heart attack.

His wife was also taken to the hospital, she is expected to be ok.

Investigators do not know what caused the fire.
