SC Senator Proposes April 4 Be Named Organ Donor Registration Day

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, S.C. -

Every day, more then 19 people die waiting on an organ transplant.

One person signing up to donate organs, can save or enhance the lives of up to eight people.

Thursday, Senator Katrina Shealy proposed that April 4th be named Organ Donor Registration Day. A special day set aside to honor those who have given and to encourage those who haven't signed up to be a donor, to sign up.

"I don't know why anyone wouldn't do it. It doesn't cost you anything, and it saves lives. I wouldn't be here today without that person who donated their organs," said John Kerce whose life was saved from an organ transplant.

Dozens of family members of those who had donated organs, live donors and donor recipients all came to the State House to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.

"Not only are they saving that one individual...they perhaps could save tow or three more people's lives," said Kenny Robinson. "And just to be able to give back or as they say, give forward...it means so much because you are touching the lives of so many people that you no idea."

Robinson had been struggling with kidney failure when a friend offered to be a donor for him.

"I wouldn't be here today without him," Robinson said remarking on how important he feels it is for people to sign up and donate.

"I don't see why you wouldn't donate, you aren't going to need them, so give them to someone who won't be able to live, or live a high quality life without them," said Kerce.

If you are interested in registering to be a donor or to see how you can volunteer with Donate Life in South Carolina, you can find more information on their website.  (hyper link: http://www.donatelifesc.org/)
