FURMAN -

Some Furman University graduates who have gone on to become prominent scholars in their fields are returning to campus to honor a retiring religion professor.

The graduates are taking part in a two-day symposium in honor of John Shelley. The gathering starts Friday, and all lectures are free and open to the public.

Shelley will retire from the faculty at the end of the current school year. He has taught at Furman since 1980.

Among the featured speakers is Warren Kinghorn, a 1997 Furman graduate who teaches at both the Medical School and the Divinity School at Duke University. Karen Guth, a 2001 graduate who is an associate professor of theology at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minn., is also slated to speak.
