Drive Top Riverdogs in Season Opener, 4-2

Greenville Drive Release -

Greenville, SC—

Greenville Drive (1-0) fans were treated to fireworks after the conclusion of Friday's game at Fluor Field.  The Drive offense lacked the fireworks of the postgame show, but they still did enough to defeat the Charleston RiverDogs 4-2 on Opening Day.

All four Drive runs came home in the bottom of the sixth inning against new RiverDogs reliever Brett Gerritse (0-1).  After a pair of walks by Cody Koback and Boss Moanaroa with one out, Aneury Tavarez drilled a double to deep center that plated Koback.  David Chester followed by pushing a two-run single through the right side and taking second base on the throw home.  Chester moved to third on a single by Kendrick Perkins and scooted home when an attempted pickoff throw hit Perkins in the back.

The sixth inning rally made a winner of Jason Garcia (1-0), who fired 5 1/3 innings of relief while allowing three hits, one run, two walks and punching out seven RiverDogs hitters.

The RiverDogs struck first in the top of the fourth against Drive starter Justin Haley.  Yeicok Calderon walked to lead off the frame, stole second and advanced to third when Jordan Weems' throw bounced into center field.  After Saxon Butler walked, Haley's attempted pickoff to first sailed away, allowing Calderon to score.

Charleston added another run against Garcia in the sixth.  Back-to-back singles by Calderon and Peter O'Brien put runners on first and second, and with one out, Kelvin De Leon grounded a double past third base to score Calderon.

Perkins collected two hits for the Drive, while Chester drove in a pair.  Cito Culver had two hits for the RiverDogs.

The Drive and RiverDogs will play a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  Game one will begin at 4:30 PM with gates opening at 3:30 PM.  Greenville sends RHP Pat Light to the mound in game one, while Charleston counters with RHP Rafael De Paula.  In game two, Greenville RHP Austin Maddox opposes Charleston RHP Derek Varnadore.
