OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. -

The bomb squad responded to a suspicious device in Oconee County that turned out to be nothing more than research equipment.

Authorities with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office say they were called Monday morning about a possible suspicious device at Stumphouse Tunnel.  A hiker discovered the device near the middle tunnel.

Investigators later found out that the equipment was a bat research device set by Clemson University.  There was never a threat to the public, officials say.
