Deputies: Williamston man lived with dead girlfriend instead of reporting death

Posted: Updated:
WILLIAMSTON, N.C. -

There's still no cause of death for the woman found in a Williamston house.

The Pitt County Medical Examiner tells 9 On Your Side the preliminary autopsy didn't indicate anything. So they're waiting to release the cause of death until the full results come back in 6-to-9 months.

Tuesday, deputies said Randall Johnson had been living with his dead girlfriend Carla Jean Baggett for several days.

There are no indications that Johnson killed Baggett. But he is still in jail for not reporting her dead.

A Williamston man lived with his dead girlfriend for several days instead of reporting her death.

That's according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say they responded to a residence on Ballard Road on Saturday, April 6, and found Carla Jean Baggett, who had been dead for several days.

Investigators determined Baggett was last seen alive on Wednesday, April 3. They say her body had already started to decompose and that Baggett's live-in boyfriend, Randall Edward Johnson, had been staying in the bedroom with her.

There's no cause of death yet, but investigators say there is no evidence of foul play.

Lieutenant Drew Robinson says they are still investigating when Baggett died.

"We're waiting in the medical examiner to release their findings, so we can't give the specific time or date of death; but, she had been there for some time," said Lieutenant Drew Robinson, Martin County Sheriff's Department.

Johnson was arrested on Saturday April 6 and charged with felony concealing a death from law enforcement.

He was placed under a $100,000 secured bond.

Dozens of drivers have filed complaints with the South Carolina Department of Transportation over loose gravel along a stretch of I-85. Officials said the complaints, which topped out at between 6 and 8 per day last week, stem from gravel that's damaged vehicles between Highway 14 and 129, where crews are working on a two-year-long resurfacing project.
