UNION COUNTY, S.C. -

Union Public Safety officers say one person is dead following an assault along a highway.

Police say they responded to the scene of an accident on Highway 176 near Sardis Road in Union just before 6 pm Wednesday night.

As officers arrived, they say they came upon an assault in progress.  They say the assault was very close to the accident scene.

Police say there was an altercation with an officer trying to intervene in the assault.

Public Safety reports that officer is in the hospital with unknown injuries and another person involved in the assault is dead.  That person was identified Thursday afternoon as Jackie McBeth, 21, of Fountain Inn.

Union County Coroner William Holcombe has not given a cause of death.  He says an autopsy performed needs further study.

Investigators say no one was shot in the altercation and SLED investigating.
