Spartanburg, SC -

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and Spartanburg County Coroner's Office are investigating a man's death at Mary Black Hospital.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger stated that the investigation began after a short altercation between 46-year-old Ansel Dewayne Marlar and members of his family while at the hospital. The altercation later involved hospital security, Clevenger stated.

Clevenger said that Marlar died a short time after the altercation, but a cause has not been determined. The autopsy was done on Saturday morning. The cause of death is pending further investigation for microscopic and toxicology examinations.

"We need to look over his medical history along with his recent medical complaints as well as review all statements related to the incident itself. We don't see traumatic injury at this point.," Clevenger stated in a prepared release.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the case.
