GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. -

It could be a year before the Greenville County School Board decides whether the new Fountain Inn High School will open on time. The school is slated to open in 2017.

School board members say they need time to consider attendance boundaries, gather community input and whether to add middle school grades to the building.

The board made the decision to dig deeper after people questioned why the building, which can accommodate 1,000 students, would open with only 114 students.

In 2011, the Greenville County School Board bought a 60 acre plot of land on Quillen Avenue. That cost taxpayers $2.2 million. The district said student enrollment was growing so fast, they needed room for 1,000 students. Two years later, those number changed. The district says if the school goes ahead as planned, 90% of the school would sit empty.

District administrators want to put the project on hold. However, board members want to spend $40 million to start construction in 2014.

School board members Crystal Ball O'Conner and Lisa Wells, who represent Fountain Inn. want to keep the school on schedule by looking into alternative models. That includes adding middle school grades to the building.

At first, O'Conner asked the board to push back the decision by six months. She then changed her proposal to a year. The school board voted 7 to 4 in favor of O'Conner's proposal. The plan needs one more vote to go forward.
