Locals Racing In Boston React To Bombings

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

It has been a frantic effort for friends and family here in the Carolinas to check in with racers in Boston following Monday's bombing incident.

Cell service is spotty.  There has been chaos on the ground.

7 On Your Side Community Watchdog Reporter Gordon Dill talked with a father and daughter from Greer, and an Anderson native who heard the explosions moments after finishing the 26 mile race.

Cherry Kent finished the race 10 minutes ahead of the blast.  Her first thought was 9-11.

"To me it was very scary," she explains.  "Terrorism was my first thought."

Paul Smith of Greer was running the Boston Marathon for the 12th time, alongside his 22-year-old daughter, Catie.  She was running in her first.

They were at the 21st mile when they were pulled from the course.

"They had everyone step off the course and wait at that point and kind of gathered us and then transported us to Boston College and we're waiting for further instructions from them," Paul adds.

Watch more of the interviews with both runners above.
