Local Runners Return From Boston Marathon, Honor Victims

As Upstate runners return home many of them are still not coming to terms with how this tragedy happened at such an honored event.

"It was a great finish for me," said Spartanburg runner Scott Brunner. "I was elated. I got through the line, the finish line. And I had the whole Boston experience."

That Boston experience quickly changed for Brunner and many other runners at Monday's marathon.

"You kind of push your own celebration down and start to look at what's happening and mourn for the others."

The Spartanburg Running Club member had just completed the race an hour before the explosions near the finish line. Fellow club member Stephen Sykes had a similar experience—one that he's still processing.

"It's just really strange to think about that happening where you just were," said Sykes. "You feel lucky in a way, yet you feel terrible for the people who were there."

The runners call the Boston Marathon an honor and a tough feat to finish. It was John Gilpin's sixth time there. As he left Boston Tuesday morning he says the sporting event just didn't feel the same.

"It's such a happy time, an inspirational time for most runners to be there," said Gilpin. "I just sensed a great sadness among all of us."

Now local runners are coming together to organizing a Silent Run. They say it's the only way their close family knows how to honor their fellow runners in Boston here at home.

"Completely silent. Nothing but the sound of feet and breathing," said Brunner. "It is our running community of Spartanburg's way of showing honor. Our run of silence. Our moment of silence."

Spartanburg Running Club and Partners For Active Living is holding the Silent Run, Monday, April 22nd at 6PM. For more information visit the Spartanburg Running Club website.
