Power Knocks-Off Drive

Greenville Drive

After a string of tough games offensively, the Greenville Drive (6-7) made some strides at the plate on Tuesday night by picking up 10 hits, but the West Virginia Power (6-7) outdid them, as they rode 14 hits to an 8-3 victory at Fluor Field.

The Power had a 1-0 lead headed to the top of the sixth, but they added three runs in that frame to propel them to the win.  After Josh Bell walked and Stetson Allie singled with one out against Drive starter Austin Maddox (0-1), the Drive brought in Yunior Ortega from the bullpen to try to work out of the inning.  The Power refused to give in, as Wyatt Mathisen smoked a line drive to right-center for a two-run double, and Eric Wood followed with a double of his own to deep left to bring in the third run.

West Virginia added a pair of runs in both the eighth and ninth innings.  Junior Sosa's two-out single to right field plated two runs in the top of the eighth, while Allie crushed a two-run homer to right-center in the ninth against Madison Younginer to extend the lead to 8-0.

The Drive didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, as they scored three runs with two outs.  Aneury Tavarez singled to left to begin the rally, and Mike Miller followed by slapping a double down the right-field line to score Tavarez and break the Drive's streak of 32 consecutive scoreless innings.  Drew Turocy followed with a sharp single to center that scored Miller, and after a walk, Jordan Weems lined a double to the left-field corner to make the score 8-3.  After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Mookie Betts' sharp grounder to third was speared by Wood and thrown to first to end the game.

The Power got on the board in the top half of the first when three consecutive singles by Bell, Allie and Mathisen plated the first run of the ball game.

West Virginia starter Orlando Castro (1-1) picked up the victory by throwing five scoreless frames.  He allowed five hits and punched out six Drive hitters.  Maddox threw five and a third innings and gave up six hits, three runs and one walk while striking out five.

Allie went 4-5 in his big night at the plate for the Power.  Mathisen added three hits and three RBIs, while Sosa had three hits and two RBIs and Wood had two hits of his own.  Turocy led the way for the Drive with three hits, while Tavarez, Miller and Weems picked up two hits apiece.

The three-game series between these two teams wraps up on Wednesday night at Fluor Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.  Red Sox LHP Franklin Morales will make the start for the Drive in a rehab appearance, while the Power will send RHP John Kuchno (0-1, 12.27 ERA) to the mound.
