Photo Gallery: Injured Bear Cub Found In WNC

An injured bear cub that was found by hikers in Lake Lure has been taken to a rehab center in Raleigh.

Officials say a couple from Wilkes County, N.C. came across the bear in the middle of a trail off Boys Camp Road and reported it to police, who then called the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission officials.

Officials say the tiny cub had an injured leg and was dehydrated when it was discovered.

They also say that when a cub becomes injured, the mother will usually abandon it, if it cannot keep up.

"It was laying there and it would move a paw every now and then, but that would be about it," said David Johnson who discovered the cub while hiking with his wife.

David's wife Tammy believes it was fate that brought them face-to-face with the bear cub.

"I think that momma bear was very smart," says Tammy. "She put it in a place where somebody was going to discover her little cub and make sure he was taken care of. I mean it just gives me goose bumps."

NCWRC officials stress that the public should not pick up or touch any wild animals.

7 On Your Side's Emily Pace says authorities are not releasing the name of the rehab center in Raleigh in order to protect the cub. It will stay there until it is healthy enough to be released into the wild.
