UNION COUNTY, S.C. -

Deputies want to warn you about a telephone scam in Union County. Sheriff David Taylor says the caller claims to work for the U.S. Treasury Department and has a grant for you.

Sheriff Taylor says his office received numerous complaints from local residents. They say someone called and claimed to work for the U.S. Treasury Department. The caller says you have been awarded a $9,000 grant that you can use any way you like, you only need to hand over your banking information.

"This is a scam and an attempt to gain your banking info," Sheriff Taylor said.

Sheriff Taylor says the 202 area code could give the caller away. He adds that you should never give out this kind of information over the phone.

Sheriff Taylor adds it's not necessary to call and let his office know you received this call, unless you gave out your personal information and fell victim to the scam.
